Phoenix

20+ years ago I adopted my first dog from a local shelter. All seemed to be fine for a few weeks until it wasn't. The honeymoon period wore off quickly and the issues started piling up. I called the local shelter to ask for help, and they referred me to a local dog trainer with 30+ years of experience who was an exclusively positive trainer. The trainer’s staff signed me up for their basic group class. After 8 weeks of training, Phoenix was still pulling on the leash and could not be trusted off-leash because he would run away and kill small animals.

After talking to the trainer on the 8th week of training, I felt like I had failed.  The trainer didn't offer to help me in any other way despite my struggles. I asked for more help and was not given any other advice but "keep training for another 6-12 months and maybe things will turn around".

3 weeks later I found myself crying on the side of the road. I had come to the end of my patience. I couldn't take it anymore, his pulling was so bad that my back was in serious pain, off-leash was not an option and I couldn't see a way to move forward.  I looked at Phoenix with tears streaming down my face and said "Buddy if you don't get better, I'm going to take you back to the shelter". I was so lost, so hopeless.

Over the next year, I left the positive only techniques that I was taught and started using a more balanced approach which actually worked for Phoenix. As it turned out, the missing link for Phoenix was that he knew that he could get away with his bad behaviour because there were no negative consequences. I used positive wherever I could and negative wherever I had to.

Fast forward a few more years, I met an incredible balanced dog trainer who was willing to teach and mentor me and I worked under him for five years honing my skills as a dog trainer. These days I've trained thousands of dogs with problems. Aggression issues are my specialty, but we cover all types of issues. If your dog is stressing you out, Our Mango Dogs trainers can help you. We’ve struggled so that you don’t have to anymore.

Services That Will Change Your Life

When: We work around our client's schedules.  That means we work Mon-Sat, morning till late night. 10:30am-10pm, Mon-Sat. Closed on Sundays.

Who: The people who we work with are motivated. Many of them have tried training that didn't work and are ready to do things the right way. They are not somewhat in need of a dog trainer, they are in desperate need, and are seeking the best of the best. Getting to the root of the issue is important to our clients. Our clients have lost the trust that they once had with their dogs, and want it back.

What we are good at: We train medium, large, XL-sized dogs of all breeds. We are not diverse trainers, we are highly specialized in a few areas.

1: Off-leash training all breeds

2: Aggression rehabilitation or all types

3: Leash aggression and pulling

4: Behavioural issues of all kinds, you name it, we've fixed it

-Not coming when called

-Leash pulling

-Dog aggression

-Human aggression

-Animal aggression

-Barking at other dogs/people

-Lunging at cars

-Destroying things in the house

-Guarding people, food, bones, toys

-Stealing food from the counters

-Excessive barking

-Separation anxiety

-Going insane when people come to the door

-Jumping on people

-Eating poop

...and many more

The Mango Dogs Difference: We start all of our clients out in private training, and then progress into group classes as the clients are gaining control and confidence.

-We refuse to throw our clients into the fire by starting them out in a high school gym with 25 other dogs

-We support our clients over the long term

-We are specialized, we refuse to take money from people unless we know we are the best trainer in the world for that person and dog

Group classes: Our group classes are awesome. Our clients can drop in when they have time, no need to book ahead. Our group classes are judgment-free, everyone in the classes has already done our private training, and had struggled with the same issues your dog struggles with.  No weird looks and no being set off to the side or segregated from the rest of the class. Our classes are held outdoors at a local park in San Diego every Saturday. We go for group walks, do obedience drills, exchange dogs, learn how to be social, etc, in the real world.

What changes will you need to make?

While many dog trainers force their clients to make a lot of changes in their lifestyle with their dog, we actively try and avoid that as much as we possibly can. If you love to snuggle your dog/dogs on the couch, we couldn't care. Like to spoon your furry friend all night? No big deal. Want to play rough with your dog, that’s fine with us.

The thing is, we only pick a battle with a client if we must.

For example, if your dog sleeps in the bed with you, and growls at your spouse every night when they crawl into bed, ok, now we have an issue that needs to be addressed. But for most dog owners, they don't have issues surrounding play, couches, sleeping on the bed, so we don't take issue. We only address things that are issues for our clients.  We don't impose our views on others unless it's absolutely critical.

Methodology

Mango Dogs trainers are balanced trainers. The term is incredibly ambiguous, so let's unpack how a good balanced training works.  We believe that each dog is an individual and needs to be trained in their own way. We use both positive and negative motivation in our training programs, and each dog will require differing amounts of each.

Some dogs are very sensitive to correction (negative motivation) and need to be treated as such. Others are willful to say the least and need a little more correction at times to ensure that they adhere to their owners commands.

Strengths and Weaknesses

As balanced trainers, we are able to take the great aspects from each style of training and utilize it where needed.

We use food, treats, praise, toys to encourage our dogs and our clients dogs to do the things that we want them to do. This type of motivation is particularly important when training fearful dogs and dogs with anxiety.

  • -Positive methods are easy and fun for anyone to implement
  • -Positive methods keep the dog being trained happy and engaged
  • -Positive methods will increase the likelihood and speed that your dog will comply with your command

Where things fall apart...

  • -Positive based methods do not help create humility in the dogs that need it
  • -Positive based methods are un-reliable when the distraction is very high
  • -Many of our clients do not want to have to carry around treats for the rest of their dogs life

The vast majority of our clients have tried only using positive methods by way of training classes or private lessons that did not meet their expectations. Our training works in the real world. At your front door. On your walks, at the park, anywhere!

Positive only training works really well... until it doesn't...

Using correction

Corrective techniques are incredible when looking to STOP bad behaviours.

An essential part of training hard to train dogs off leash, we routinely train beagles, huskies, even wolf hybrids off leash.

Getting to the root of things, every dog should understand that no means no and come means come. Jumping on people, pulling on the leash, attacking other dogs or people are not acceptable and will result in a correction.

If corrective techniques are improperly used by an owner or trainer, the dog can lose confidence in the training process. This is why you need a qualified trainer to help implement these methods. When used properly, they can be a real game-changer.

We have been the go to trainers in Nova Scotia since 2009 for off leash training, and aggression rehabilitation because of our expertise in e collar training. E collar training is by far the most misunderstood tool in the world of dog training. Often referred to as shock collars, they do not shock. The e collars that we use have three functions for communication.

  1. Tone
  2. Vibrate
  3. Pulse

They can be used in the water for dogs who swim, and have a minimum of a 1/2 mile range. They are used to get your dogs attention and can be used on leash, off leash, in the house, in the car, in the ocean, etc.

Typically we use the tone to communicate with our dogs that they should come back to us, and we use the pulse as a corrective measure. The pulse stimulation feels like a Tens Unit that chiropractors and physiotherapy clinics use as a muscle simulator. This pulse is adjustable from 1-100 levels which makes it a versatile tool that can be used on dogs of all sensitivity levels.

How Long Will You Need To Train Your Dog?

The answer is different with every dog and client, but you can expect to put in a few short sessions a day for at least a 28 days. Then, you will continue to use the tools and techniques over the long term to maintain the training that you have done. If you completely stop doing what we teach you, it will be a waste of your time and money. Our techniques are very effective, but they need to be maintained.

100%

GUARANTEE

100% Satisfaction Guarantee

Most dog trainers don’t offer guarantees.  The reason why is that a dog trainer can’t guarantee that YOU are going to do the work. Just like a personal trainer can’t guarantee that you will show up to the gym.

We assume that everyone coming to us is willing and ready to work with and train their dog over the long term. 64% of our clients have used 1-6 other dog training services before reaching us. Is it just me or is that NOT Acceptable! Our goal is to be your LAST dog trainer.

In our private dog training programs we are so confident that you will get great results that we provide a lifetime of ongoing service as needed. If our clients require extra assistance we offer it at no additional cost. If you do the work, we will help you for as long as needed at no extra cost!

Our private training clients are expected to do just two short sessions per day that are just 10 min per session for a duration of 6 weeks. After that, we transition into maintenance mode, and your time investment is even less. We train you how to train your dog in situations that are already happening. For example. Your friends are already coming over for lunch, we will show you how to integrate our methods into the time you are already investing in your dog.
